My web hosting messed up my blog

Hey guys, I’ve a bad news for you, my web hosting (which previously hosted this domain) really got messed up. It seems that they have problem with late paying bills of their reseller account.

So now my account accidently suspended and so are theirs, I don’t know how much days it will take for them to clear things up, but I wont put my hopes much, I think i rather start this blog from scratch rather than wait for them to recover (if that the case!).

Why did I have to start from scratch? Well to make the story short, It seems I’ve deleted all my backup about this blog from my pc, so here I am, back to square one. But I promised to keep this blog updated with new posts and tips.

So my advise is, please choose your web hosting company and domain carefully, they might fscked with you if you’re not careful enough.

p/s: no prize will be given for those who are able to guess which is my web hosting company :p

Backup WordPress Database Automatically

Although backing up wordpress database may seems unimportant to some, but it is crucial for frequently updated blogs with high traffic.
Self-hosted WordPress are vulnerable to various server failure and data loss, and you can’t always rely on your webhosting company to make database backup on your behalf everyday, because they might have thousand of customers to attend to. The best they could do when hard disk crash occur is to restore the previous backup they made (and that might be days ago, if not weeks).

To make this work, you need to do is download and install WP-Cron and WP-DB-Backup plugins by Scott Merill.

After you’ve done with that, activate WP-Cron and WP-DB-Backup plugins, and then go to Manage->Backup Tab. You’ll see extra optionswhich enable you to send your WordPress backup daily to email (I suggest using gmail.com as they have large storage size).

Do not store your WordPress backup on the same server as your wordpress hosting, because if the server goes down, It will take your backup along with it, use gmail email service instead.

It might seems to much to backup your wordpress daily, but you never know when your hard disk might fails, and the daily backup might be worthwhile to make. Remember: better be safe than sorry!

CleanCSS – Optimise your website CSS file

CleanCSS is a useful website that helps you optimise your CSS file in order to make it small and load faster on the internet. The optimiser are based on csstidy , and opensource css parser and optimiser.

CleanCSS is handy for removing redundant css selector, thus producing cleaner and more readable css file. The service support css version 1.0 up to 2.1 and has an option for maximum compression by sacrificing readability over size. This will produce small sized css but unreadable css file.

The main limitation of CleanCSS that it does not validate the CSS file itself, it assume that the supplied input is valid. This requires  you to validate your css file first using W3C CSS Validator before you start using CleanCSS.

I’ve tried CleanCSS personally, and it works briliantly on my CSS files. I think you should give it a shot too!

Web 2.0 Logo Creator !

I think almost every casual web surfers already heard about Web 2.0, the latest buzzwords today. On first glance, they all spot large font, rounded corners, bright colors and a distinctive logo with the word “Beta” attached next to them. Just like this one,

The good news is, you can generate this logo freely with Web 2.0 Logo creator. The bad news is, the website only serves as a parody of Web 2.0 hype. There isn’t much customisation you can do with the logo creator aside from ticking “Add Reflection” and “Add Beta” option.

All in all this is a nice website which can serve as an example on future Web 2.0 logo creator. So is there anybody brave enough to come out with one?
